John Carlos, the bronze-medal winning athlete famous at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics for raising his black-gloved fist in silent protest while on the victory stand, along with gold-winning Tommy Smith. In this photo taken in South Central Los Angeles he speaks to community members of that moment and his life of helping young people and fighting racism.
