Bernardo de Galvez Ave., Galveston, Texas. Photo by Nic Paget-Clarke. Galveston was named after Bernardo de Galvez in the 1820's by Mexico when Galveston was part of Mexico. Bernardo de Galvez was the governor of Louisiana during the American Revolution when Louisiana was part of the Spanish empire. During the Revolutionary War, Bernardo de Galvez was responsible for funneling supplies to the Continental Army and also for capturing British forts along the Mississippi. He then besieged and captured Pensacola, Florida from the British. On December 16, 2014, President Obama signed a Congressional resolution granting Bernardo de Galvez honorary U.S. citizenship.
